Zen Buddhist monk – what’s the truth of it? hard to find ’cause we romanticize it.

Oh, like this stuff? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6pllQ_-ZxEA Of course, this is a romanticized view of it, with the fancy music and stuff, making it sound all mystical and stuff.

Maybe it is, I dunno. We idolize Zen Buddhism in the West thanks to .. oh, what’s his face? ah here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shunry%C5%AB_Suzuki – Suzuki. yeah. He helped popularize it in the version we got here.

Then we get the stuff in the movies. That’s mostly how we know about it.

what’s the truth of it? I dunno. Maybe a locally made documentary about it. I’ll see what I can find.

Ah here! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uC5fbbR30VA here’s a japanese documentary (in English) going through their actual day.

oh screw this. I’m not even 2 minutes into it and I’m like wtf. yeah, no I’ll scratch Buddhist monastery off my retirement plans, at least not a Japanese one tongue emoticon maybe one of the more lightweight ones. Still overall, doesn’t matter which one. The one I was at (Eastern Orthodox) was good, but I’m not holding myself to that one in any case. A secular one is fine too – planned community of some kind.. although most secular epicurean communities fall apart eventually.

Oh wait a minute – this is no different than US Army Boot Camp. These are are young people. Ok, yeah, it’s not so different. It’s like military discipline. Same idea.

You can’t be younger than 20 (earliest they take is 7 yrs old, so, school age). – and after that, you live off alms.

So, it’s intense training to be a bum, but a really nice bum.

Sounds good smile emoticon [I know it sounds mean but hey, I’m from ‘meruka]

Wait a minute! We have PhD programs for that! you know.. to end up as a bum, living off parents so you can write ‘that book’.
