75% of the reason? Corn. In 2005, the US Congress required corn-based ethanol be blended into fuels. The result? Food for animals became more expensive. The food from the animals became more expensive. Nobody expected that but everything makes sense when you are looking backwards. Now you know – a good idea that is supposed to "fix a problem once and for all" usually has unintended consequences. Be flexible; every problem has more than one solution.^
