There’s been further research done in this area – a LOT of it.

Look up information regarding the N400 and especially http://www.nrc-cnrc.gc.ca/…/brain_activity-activite…
especially the inhibition [the “no” before the possible “yes/no/maybe/decision/words” that occur before the semantic systems are fully online, about a 1/4 of a second before the glorious n400.

These timescales seem short, but they’re not short at all. I guess because I’ve been studying in this zone, experientially and as much research as I can find on it… and perhaps having a musician’s timing, I dunno… anything beyond N400 is old news because that’s when the sentences form.

But the interesting stuff happens before the semantic systems are fully online. You’re aware of them but you’re frozen without words for a about 1/3 of a second and then the sentences form.
