you have to understand the machinery at work, which is a complicated mess with people

  • I’ve known people who focus on getting all the little details perfect, making sure their net gain is slightly higher than the competition, because they’re gameplayers.

But I play a different game. Short term net gains and losses, whether financial, emotional, whatever, I find are typically inconsequential in the long term and average out to around 0.

The trick is knowing what small things can lead to long term net gain and for that, you have to understand the machinery at work, which is a complicated mess with people involving psychology, sociology, cultural influence, temperment, but entirely doable with fortitude, patience and the right mindset.
