But where I came from in NJ, it was two towns away from the Newark riots in the 60s. Cops vs Blacks. Devastated major parts of the city. Took them 40 years to recover and they’re still struggling. But where I grew up, just a few miles away, it was a lily white Italian American / Irish American neighborhood with 5 black families. Still didn’t feel like “my town” although it should have: You had to have connections to a mafia family or to one of the Irish cop families. This was the 80s and 90s. Strange place to grow up in.
