Yodeling is simultaneously amazing and terrifying but mostly amazing.

Yodeling is simultaneously amazing and terrifying but mostly amazing.

Some of that Byzantine / Greek / Russian / etc acapella stuff is also amazing, especially some of that bass they hit.

Not sure where to place barbershop quartet though.

I call myself agnostic now but I had a case of convertitis in my mid 20s to Eastern Orthodoxy and once I could read iconography it opened up my mind in a big way. {i was raised Methodist but went on a “search for roots” and nearly ended up in an Orthodox monestary. Still might someday. I liked the lifestyle]

From age 13-18 I was custodian at my local Methodist church in NJ. It had a full time secular nursery school so it was 7 days a week.

One day age I looked around the sanctuary and though, “This place needs more candles or something”.

In my religious questing, I think the Unitarians hit my political ideas closely and I liked the Quaker quiet/spirit moves you thing. Anglicans had the BEST pomp and circumstance…. the music is amazing. Almost went Catholic (had a job at a Catholic college doing data entry, talked to a lot of priests and things). Orthodox was the last thing I looked at, just as I was about to dive into Catholic. Glad I did. Put me on a five/six year journey that was amazing. No regrets.

I probably would although I think I’d want to stick to mainstream if I ever did Catholic only because I was attracted to a more culty-side of Orthodoxy at first (ROCOR while the were still out of communion) and wouldn’t want to repeat that experience. Nothing bad happened but I was close to being pulled in.

Orthodox theology is what grabbed me most. Gregory Palamas’s Essense vs Energies helped clarify things for me and I remember a three week stay at a Russian Orthodox monestary in Georgia (yet everybody there was from Tennessee it seemed) where one night I had a long vision of essence/energies and how it relates to Triune God and humanity and what the transfiguration of matter is about and human’s role in it… and well, it was amazing. Took lots of notes which I have somewhere.
