Yeah, temperature issues. Sometimes it’s not possible to get a full rolling boil. The pasta still cooks but having never reached a starch breaking temperature, the magic doesn’t happen quite the same.
That’s right – they’re par-boiled. Already cooked, fried and dried. I was thinking of spaghetti from a box.
I’ve done both kinds: “bring everything” and “bring very little”. I like the “bring very little” camping better too. Cooking in one pot. Use your pocket knife for everything.
The handiest item for camping to me was black garbage bags. Very multipurpose. You can camp without them but they solve a lot of unexpected issues being water proof.
You can collect water in hot dry weather with them. Dig a ditch about a foot or two deep. Put a pot or bowl in the middle of the hole. Stretch the plastic bag (cut open to be a flat sheet) and pin down the edges with rocks so it looks like a drum.
Then put a rock in the middle over the pot.
The water vapor under the sheet condenses on the underside of the plastic sheet, rolls towards the middle and collects in the bowl.
It doesn’t give you a lot of water but it gives enough for a person to drink.
