Yeah. I think that’s what gets me about a lot of the rhetoric: I’m all for science education. Even some science evangelizing is fine. But… I think they kind of see themselves as Elite because they have strong followings, TV contracts with BBC and Science Channel and stuff… get gatherings at discussions and people love their youtube videos and books.
But… it’s a bit much and like you said, it can backfire on actual scientific careers. Neil doesn’t really have to worry: he’s an entertainer and he’s a lovable teddy bear so he’ll always have something to do. But some of the less lovable, more cantankerous scientists who are also riding the wagon train that might find themselves without an audience should this attempt at a movement grow sour.
