Why autonomy thickens here
Autonomy becomes:
spatial (where I go)
temporal (when I engage)
relational (who I learn with)
epistemic (what counts as knowledge)
moral (why I learn at all)
Schools usually allow one of these. You’re claiming all five.
Opinion (explicit):
This model is harder politically but cleaner philosophically. It treats young people as emerging citizens, not pre-citizens.
What this demands (no sugarcoating)
Real trust in youth judgment
Willingness to tolerate uneven outcomes
Strong conflict resolution structures
Cultural shift away from “education as control”
