May of last year I came across an archive of pre-2014 memes, which I turned into a tear-jerking retrospective of memes from days of yore. It was the days of innocence, when memes had their own lives and were free.
Most of these memes are much older than that. A lot of 2009 memes and a splatter of 2011 memes plus a few 2013s.
Some of them might be older still but I only really started noticing meme subculture shifts around 2009 and I’ve been paying attention since.
If you want a _real_ throwback, this is from 2011. Consider these memes were common and current at that time.
I remember that song! Back in the awesome days _before_ commercial outlets figured out the “viral formula” and started using it for their business ventures.
I spent a few years on Vine (RIP) so I had the pleasure of seeing Vine memes just as they came out and before they spread. It was fun ’cause you never knew what random thing would skyrocket next.
What I loved about Duck Army is it was so unexpected Who would think to squish a bunch of squeaky toy ducks to make them all scream? It inspired so many others, but that breath they all seem to take before the screaming gets me everytime.
