“Whether deaf and dumb, blind, insane, idiotic, pauper or convict.”
1860 Census, Branford, Connecticut USA.
Census and “Value” is as old as writing itself.
This particular June 1860 Census wanted to know:
Name
Age
Sex
Color (White, Black or Mulatto)
Occupation (Warmer? Probably loaded coal in furnaces at a factory)
Value of Real Estate
Value of Personal Estate
Birthplace
Whether deaf and dumb, blind, insane, idiotic, pauper or convict.
This is what mattered in 1860 population statistics. I don’t think anything has changed much at all, not at all.
