“when you point your finger at someone, three fingers point back at you”. Agreed.

a friend wrote in general:

“if your analysis or criticism of something is contingent entirely on what you think an individual is trying to consciously get across, or on the pathos of the individual, you’re failing to address not just the work itself but you’re failing to validate your own criticism: this kind of faulty approach just opens room for valid dismissal of your own critique and of defense of the work you’re trying to criticize.”

I replied:

“when you point your finger at someone, three fingers point back at you”.

Agreed.
[but you said it in a more nuanced way, which captures more of the mechanism of the process]

“why does this metal band have an entire woodwind orchestra with them, how pretentious!”
