what I’m trying to find out is: is there any physical process that needs numerically counted objects that are treated as if they are identical things? concepts like more less and equivalent? yes. but “if there is five of identical thing do this action in response”, i don’t think there is anything where it would even be necessary.

if there is no use of that notion in the physical world in relation to itself, then our use of it is not an accurate rendering of how things work.

i know chemistry is math-like but it may be more that math is chemistry-like — that it is, there is thermodynamics to consider for example
