What does “don’t work” mean? Doesn’t work perfectly in all cases for all things? Ok. Doesn’t work at all? How do you prove? I bet I can find statistics of gun violence dropping after gun free zones established.

a) They’re not criminals until they commit a crime.
b) These are regular citizens up to the point they commit a crime.
c) They almost always have SOME existing connection to the school.

You’re assuming it’s rational to shoot up a place.
You’re assuming rational thinking processes will take place in the choice of location, rather than a “gut choice”.
You’re assuming a school shooter thinks like you.
Do you think like a school shooter?

https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm5702a1.htm It’s older but thorough.

“Overall and single-victim school-associated student homicide rates decreased significantly during July 1992–June 2006; both decreased from 0.07 per 100,000 students to 0.03 per 100,000 students (p<0.001 and p = 0.004 by chi-square test, respectively). However, rates for overall and single-victim school-associated homicides during a more recent period, July 1999–June 2006, did not change significantly (Figure). During both periods (July 1992–June 2006 and July 1999–June 2006), multiple-victim student homicide rates remained stable. ”

So they were reduced, then leveled out statistically. This shouldn’t be a surprised. 0.07 to 0.03 sounds like Gun-Free Zones cut deadly school shootings in 1/2, from 7000 to 3000 per 100000

===

Gun violence before Gun-Free Zones was MUCH worse, much more wide spread, much more common.

===

Movie style school shootings may be new-ish, but boring everyday “kid shot other kid”, “parent shot neighbor kid by mistake”, gang A shot 5 members of gang B went dramatically down. The USA is much safer than it was as a whole.

But fear sells guns. Peace kills the gun industry.

===

There WERE 18 school shootings, just not massive ones. They’re still noteworthy because shots were fired in zones where shots should not be fired at all.

Was that misleading? What isn’t? “Gun free zones don’t work” is far more misleading and inaccurate.

===

Yes I read those and why it’s considered misleading. Was it dirty hyperbole calling all of those school shootings? Probably. But if it’s a drug deal on school grounds in a gun free zone, it’s still a school shooting incident, even if the general public is looking for dead student bodies and is sad not to find them.

===

Treat every child from 5-18 as a prisoner in a high security prison so they get used to it. Grooming future prisoners rather than free citizens.

===

I got out of public into a private for high school and it was best thing for me. I don’t like gigantic schools.

===

WAAAY back when I was 18, I shared some “anarchist youth” ‘zines online a lot. I wasn’t REALLY an anarchist but I sympathized with a lot of their ideas. Still do.

===

That’s why I was never “full anarchist”. I always knew it was ridiculous, as is any full libertarian stance. My heart will always be “we should have cell like neighborhoods that cooperate in larger organs to form a body” but I also know that you have to have both bottom up and top down.

===

True but strong top-down is also silly as you’ll never “catch” everybody, it encourages resistance and is at minimum a two-class system (security vs the citizen, who is a prisoner of the state).

People need a sense of autonomy.

===

Well, a govt is always big. So what do you do with that power?

Do you push people down or raise people up?
Do you get out of the way except when there’s obvious problems or stay involved? How involved? When do you back off and let them grow? When do you cut them off?

It’s a lot of responsibility for a government to have, That’s why doing it properly is so important.

===

I doubt we’ll ever get a big Utopia. But I firmly believe the world is a much better place than it ever was before, even with the bad things
