“What am I expected to do next? Which move can I make that they would least expect?”

I never memorized move sets. Tried a few times as a teenager. But I always had a simple strategy: contrarian. That’s most of it. I ask myself, “What am I expected to do next? Which move can I make that they would least expect?”

Sometimes I have additional criteria with strategy but that’s the ‘gist’ of it right there. I don’t always do “least expect with most benefit to me” because that’s in the set of “expected next” moves, especially with rational players.

I can usually hold my own in several matches. win-some, lose-some.

Played chess in school, especially summers. With a computer in the late 80s/early 90s, spent more time with Battle Chess and got pretty good at it back then, playing with friends as well although I slacked off through the years, but any time a game came up, I’d play on occasion.
