Well, I think experience can teach us our GENERAL malleability.
That is, if we see ourselves as soft materials with the flexibility to harden up in some areas or rather to modify our densities in various ways, we can, over time, discover and test what leaves us with results we prefer; “Preventing Regret” as it were.
That is, if we mechanically deform in a way that is undesirable and cannot return to the shape – or achieve the new shape – desired – then that might be a kind of regret to be prevented.
So by discovering what we do not want, we learn to avoid behavior leading to what we do not want for sure.
What’s left will not give us the answers in how to choose each case when to resist or submit but it may give us ranges to “stay within” without having to think consciously about it; to automatize decision-making to some degree, freeing up our resources to fine-tune at the time or even entirely change it.
