Well, I don’t know. It’s possible. I’m not a news junkie generally and when I look at news, it’s to find out how many people got wounded, missing, killed, where a bad thing happened and sometimes to follow the who-did-what-to-whom stuff.

“did you hear what that person said?”
_oh, you can’t trust that person. But hey, listen to that other person!”
“Oh I don’t listen to that other person because of that other thing they did the other time”
_oh can’t trust anybody these days_
“yeah”
oh yeah. and maybe he was related, I dunno. I just know, even if Freud never existed, Bernay’s impact on business, government and media to public can’t be overstated.
His methods work and continue to work.

My reality isn’t built on news stories. I’m more focused on things I’m studying at the time.
I actually spent years having ZERO contact with any news. I was proud of that fact, which confused and annoyed some people. I figured people would tell me if something was important or not.
Ignored most of Bush and Obama’s eras – big chunks of Clinton. Had other stuff to do.

My idea of the correct direction of society was formed when I was a kid and hasn’t changed much.

  •  I turned TV off in 2013. I barely watch anything.
My news comes in snippets here and there but isn’t dominant to my reality.
What you describe is someone who is a news junkie who feeds solely off of news for their reality formation.

I get Twitter headlines – whatever’s trending that wasn’t obviously pushed in the middle of the night by bots, and whatever people are gossiping about.

I believe very strongly that it’s important to keep your head as clear as possible if you can.
For example, I’ve been on this project since 2013. It was very important to me to NOT inject any one person’s “theory of it all” into my head, so I stayed away from the ‘I’VE FIGURED IT OUT!” folks, stayed away from Youtube “Guy explains everything you wanted to know” things, etc.
I stuck to Wikipedia, Google Scholar, people I talked to on Facebook and other places (that’s 2 way feedback which is superior because of negotiation of meaning)
I think Youtube has become an effective replacement for TV and with the ability to follow people you like, the dangers of getting a one-way stream of only what you’re already likely to agreement is very powerful.

I believe a person’s “favorite Youtubers” is now a far more powerful and dangerous source than ‘TV is.
TV used to be dangerous but it’s probably less dangerous now as people are more likely to watch Youtube or stream only what they want to see on their Rokus and Firesticks and stuff.

I’m generalizing. I’m not considering you. I’m referring to public figures that have large followings, etc.

I’m talking about youtubers like Michael from VSauce back in the day, etc. People with lots and lots of facts and narratives to guide you to a full understanding of a topic from start to finish.
Those are the people I’d stayed away from.
My studies have been mostly science and math type things – that’s the stuff I’m referring to.
The world of mini-cults all over the place is precisely what I try to avoid.

But sometimes I do end up liking someone a lot and following their stuff. But at that point, I’m super-certain. I spent a long time being very skeptical of myself.

yeah, no i get it. I see lots of zombies out there. I mostly encounter it among people with favorite Youtubers or authors.
Can’t say one bad thing about their favorite. If you do , they get really really upset.
I’m not in the realm of politics 99% of the time. I was studying science-type things. I love Michael from VSauce – which is why I avoided him for so long. He could lull me in. I wouldn’t have the objectivity. That’s what was dangerous at the time.
Now I could watch it no problem, but he had me mesmerized at the time with this clarity and entertainment value.
Enough time has passed now that it’s all old hat. But at the time, I didn’t want to get hooked.
I’d just divested myself from being hooked on TV – the “Into the Universe” type of shows I was binging on. [this is pre-streamers – I had way too many of them recorded on my Dish DVR that I had at the time]
