The subjects link well to college and university education with the end result theoretically of a well-rounded citizen who is capable of critical thinking beyond whatever tasks are assigned for a daily job. Also in the principle is that everybody gets a “basic education” that is broadly similar enough without requiring it to be identical. and it should lead to a more educated populace. In practice, this does not always hold up and can seem like archaic goals from 150-200 years ago, not relevant to today.
