« Depends. I want to believe that I’d jump in and save the day but I also know that intervention can sometimes be harmful for without the ability to carry through with any followup, it could get worse due to my jumping in. But thankfully, I can’t think of many times as an adult that I was faced with that. I know of one time that I didn’t and I still am haunted by my inaction. I was walking back from work (when in New Jersey) and saw what looked like a bunch of fourth graders surrounding and beating up what looked like a second grader. I wanted to yell, “HEY HEY WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU’RE DOING” but I also remembered _being_ that 2nd grader and that payback (for getting help) was sometimes 5x worse, so I kept walking, pretending not to see. So, what I _might think_ I’d do contrasts sharply with what I actually _did_ do. What would I do next time? If it was same situation, I’d like to think I’d play the noisy and nosy grownup and break it up. I chase bears off this property at least once a month. But humans are tricky.

Except it’s not though. You know what it is right? Remember the dinosaur extinction event? All that shit got trapped under the earth. We’ve been bringing it all up back into the atmosphere for the last 150 years.

Close to real time. There’s a lag that’s socially acceptable but it’s really short. I had a bad stutter as a kid. Too many words wanted to pour our at once. Had to slow down vocal muscles and brain. Speech therapist put strawberry paste on the back of my throat for some reason and showed me how to create a little ‘void’ in my head to sort words out quickly before speaking them. The shortest speed of the world is 13ms. Anything shorter than that is instant. Mutliplayer gaming programmers and network engineers try to work with that 13ms as a golden goal to reach when they can.
I’m thinking it should be obvious to anyone. The timing difference though is so small — I’ve read scientific papers that claim there’s a “merging” that goes on in such short under 50ms time scales but I find that hard to believe as I can hear it clearly.
Being born with poor hearing, I know this all too well. Fast branching into a context is key. When you lack context, it’s REALLY hard because the branching can go anywhere. But with branching + context, a single syllable can easily branch into a limited set of words to choose from that you then backtrack and change if the context from the heard part of the sentence modifies your earlier expectations. Well, that’s my first time putting into words my daily experience since I was little but there it is.
