Trial and error. It’s our default human methodology. Babies do trial and error. Language learning is trial and error. Play, social negotiations are trial and error. Engineering, when there’s not good data or science available otherwise, uses heuristics and trial and error.
It’s a human default position.
The scientific method is one of the refinements on that.
It’s a very good refinement. But we can’t forget our default position because sometimes there’s just just not enough time to come up with a good, testable, verifiable hypothesis because, oh, let’s say there’s a rocket that has to get to the moon by 1969. Lots of science there of course, but a lot of it was bucketloads of trial and error and heuristics. Good engineering practices.
