I believe that law enforcement is useful and serves a necessary purpose in a society. I’m not anti police.
But that’s why I think it’s so necessary to call out deficiencies. I’m glad for body cams now. I’m glad people have smartphones with cameras. It’s not perfect but it’s something.
I’m sure it’s not always possible but I’d really like to see more police departments be compelled to know the people they serve better. Know the people in the neighborhood. Here’s a 14 yr old boy with autism in the neighborhood this officer was patrolling. I’m sure it’s not possible to know everybody but I think it might be a goal worth considering.
This officer was unaware of what autism is. He saw tics and interpreted it as suspicious behavior. Autism is common enough that it’s not unreasonable before being set out onto the world to gauge appropriate and inappropriate behaviors among the public to understand some distinctions.
Maybe it’s not possible. I don’t know. But it still makes me sad to see this. Maybe America has always been this way and there just weren’t enough cameras around. I don’t know. But it makes me sad that this should happen at all. [call me naive, it’s fine]
