This does not happen often I don’t blame guns, gaming, Millennials or even the toxic socializing often found in certain gaming communities, although I’m tempted to blame toxic socializing environments.
This is not a common thing. Millions upon millions of people, young and old are in these environments and *don’t* shoot their moms, or shoot up their schools, or run over people.
That said… I’m sorry this happened and I hope they’ll go through this forensically and figure out possible causes. Mental illness is of course on top, but even if there’s none or is, also go through the environment and see what could have brought it on.
Would he *not* have shot his mother if he wasn’t gaming? Would he have gone after her in some other way without guns? Should addiction be addressed? All this and more will be hashed out on gamer forums across the planet, in various news, someone will want something banned and someone else will say “No, it wasn’t that”… and on it goes.
