Thing is though, you have “freedom from” and “freedom to”. Can’t have one without the other, but they butt heads sometimes.

That’s true and there’s no reason it should suddenly stop. But consider how many watchdogs are out there today compared to yesteryear? Sure, it’s possible to do things behind closed doors, but with social media means more pushback and hopefully a greater forced transparency.

She could’ve been a guy with a British accent, 65 years old with smart professor written all over him with a pipe in his mouth, walking you through like David Attenborough (it’s David right? nature guy)? and I don’t think you’d believe it then either 😛

Thing is, I do. One guy gets 19 dead people registered. But did he get 19 extra votes? No. He was caught. System works.

Do I think, as a white guy, that some racist complaints seem a bit much? Sure. I also think men who complain about circumcision are a bit much. But in this case, I think they’re on the money.

I know people without photo IDs. I know people who are poor enough to be unable to afford to go through the process of getting a proper Photo ID, but they *can* get to the voting booth, have their signatures on file and such.

To me, if a state wants to do Photo ID, they should issue them, not wait for the citizen to come forth to get it. That places an inhibition on a citizen voting.

Thing is, the vote is a big deal. Gun rights are mentioned once. How many times are voting rights mentioned in the Constitution? FIVE times.

copying from an article I’m reading:

15th, 19th, 24th, and 26th – even use the same powerful language to protect it: “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged . . . .”

I think the Constitution is a powerful document, subject to revision. I mean, if it worked fine in its larval stage, it’d still be there. But it’s a changing document. I like that aspect of it.

===

Not all things. Just talking about the Constitution drawn up before we had experience at actually using it.

It could be argued that we were just a bunch of cry babies over taxes that were actually quite reasonable expectations considering the protections provided by the British Navy. But then, I’d be a Redcoat for suggesting that, so I won’t.

Well, it’s precisely the Declaration of Independence as to why I’m ok with BLM. They see an injustice and they’re rebelling. Maybe they want to administer themselves separately? I don’t know. It’s their rebellion.

I always supported the troops. The police though, it depends. My mother worked for the local Prosecutor’s Office there, with the jail across the street. It was part of the ‘next stage’ of law enforcement. Growing up, I heard all the stories about the things the cops do when nobody’s looking. Now, she’s pro police all the way, but she says there’s two types of cops: The do-gooder and the bully. Over the years, she’s added, “the incompotent (neither bully nor do-gooder.. just, doesn’t belong there). They’re broken and overly tied to political/family appointments. NJ is a VERY political state.

Start making friends. Shmooze. Get to know people. Attend the right rallies, hang out at the right bars, make the right friends in both low and high places and in politics.

Can’t just show up with good intentions. You need connections. Lots of NJ is like that.
