Seem silly but most plastic surgery seems silly to me. You’re technically an infante until you are 18 years old in the USA, and similar definitions exist worldwide..

…kids can’t choose school. Can’t choose lots of things. So, a skin flap gets snipped off. Botched surgeries happen. It’s a cultural tradition, codified in religious texts but I fold together religion into cultural norms. Nothing special about religion; it’s culture.
