Theoretical physics isn’t fully science; it’s speculation based on mathematical models. It’s plausible Science Fiction.

I remember when I first saw this poll – it was actually helpful in helping me determine which models I learned towards and away from.

The thing that makes Theoretical Physics “that kind of field” is that there really *isn’t* much in the way of determining “what is behind” the models. In fact, there’s a growing movement to cut the cord with Physics and the rest of the Science community by giving them the exclusive ability to _not_ be required to have empirical evidence.

Seems great – for them. But since they carry the torch for “THIS IS SCIENCE”, it would be a very bad idea, imho. Theoretical physics isn’t fully science; it’s speculation based on mathematical models. It’s plausible Science Fiction. it’s also my favorite one of the sciences for that reason.

However… it’s becoming a bit of a religion, believing itself (and teaching) that the rest of the Sciences are simply built on top of it, which doesn’t seem to be the case at all… it’s just a “nice idea” that they’e _like_ to be true. Nice and neat. But… the balloon is starting to fly away into the clouds, and as much of a dreamer as I am and as much as I love Sci Fi… and for as long as I believed a lot of the need for them to carry on their critical work… after hearing impassionate pleas for funding to be directed towards Theoretical Physics rather than AI efforts because AI was going to take over the planet… I realized somebody let go of the string.

Oh well. I can’t change it. I just wish they’d check their historical facts sometimes… I CRINGE whenever one of them starts trying to teach history. They’re TERRIBLE at it. tongue emoticon
