The not-hiring is intentional though. It started as a way to get extra govt funds during COVID but they’re still doing it because it’s simply saving money as people are getting accustomed to receiving poor customer service. They could hire people. I know a lot of people who search for work and nobody’s ACTUALLY hiring. They just say they are. Very annoying.

Either that or they fired their HR depts too soon and nobody knows HOW to properly hire anybody anymore.

In some industries though, people aren’t signing up because they pay is crap and there’s better paying jobs elsewhere.
SO industries that DEPENDED upon poor pay and chopped up schedules aren’t finding “workers” for what’s basically volunteer labor

Growing up, everybody thought I was from Canada.
I was the nice, mildly witty weird guy in the group that looked like he didn’t want to be there, which I didn’t but did. I guess I exude a Canadian awkwardness. But I’d hold my own if I had to but had to be careful not to hit people at the center — that “thing” you “just don’t say” about the other person.

The pay increases at McD and WalM had to happen and this is just what it took to make it happen.
So that will ultimately improve things. [they were already automating years ago – my town was one of the first to get automatic cashiers around 2013/14 during Obama’s reign which I thought was great and still do]
Manufacturing jobs? well, it’s possible they can pay training wages for the first 90 days and to avoid paying the $5000 bonus, not hire them, then claim they wanted to find greener pastures elsewhere and act confused.
The fact that it’s chronic – and at the same workplaces – leads me to believe it’s deliberate. Help wanted signs are cheap and lying is easy.

What I hate is the inauthentic way “unemployment” is calculated. They based it upon “who applies and receives unemployment” but there are strict rules for even applying for unemployment, and most “jobs” aren’t “real jobs” according to the unemployment office and so don’t qualify for it.
Meanwhile, we talk about “jobs jobs jobs” but they’re not unemployment-worthy jobs. So, the game continues and people are out of work, uncounted, doing gigs instead.
