The mood of the farmer isn’t my concern. It’s the very distinctness of the farmer, outside of the picnic fence, away from the city, in the midground. Look, 1) Shrinking cities? Great! As Saint Ted says: The Industrial Revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race. They have greatly increased the life-expectancy of those of us who live in “advanced” countries, but they have destabilized society, have made life unfulfilling, have subjected human beings to indignities, 2. Family, kids, dog, whatever, great! 3. Why is the farmer by himself? the only visible worker in the whole scenario? The city implies work being done as well – that’s what happens in cities – work work work. But the farmer’s the only other named group than the family.
