The gaps between notes in music can be outer spaces, the notes the inner spaces, the beginning of notes one vestibule, the ending of notes another –
the Hero’s Journey of a silence, having transitioned into a note, returning to silence but changed.
Oh for the brain it is, or tends to be. My brain tracks individual instruments and notes in most songs, which can be annoying at times particularly when the notes are MIDI wavetable sounds and their attack or release is too soon or choppy or if an applied echo is at the wrong pace.
My mind is always rewriting songs as I hear them, making corrections along the way or going in different directions.
I know the overall patterns of songs which I use to skip around in youtube to find interesting bits (I loved finding “the drop” during EDM era) but it’s rare I listen to a song all the way through.
