It plays differently in the original doesn’t it? Gary Jules did such a tremendous cover of the song that the original has nearly been completely lost and forgotten. [I give credit where it’s due: The cover modified the original and brought out an element of the song that was only hinted at in the original; I’d even say that yes, the cover improved upon the original. Don’t sue me].
That said I love Tears for Fears as well and I didn’t recognize it was the same song either until I read it somewhere. I thought, “No way – they’re TOTALLY different songs”. But nope – same song.

He did such an amazing job with the slow speed and melancholy piano and way he sung it, that even turning into a MAJOR key doesn’t make it happy. How the hell he pulled it off, I have no idea.

Oh absolutely. I find the original more relatable personally: you analyzed it perfectly there. It speaks to the ‘gaps’ missing in our hurried lives, rushing around for no good reason really.
Gary Jules takes it to another level, where someone is actually _comfortable_ in that space and wants to stay there whereas the Tears for Fears is more like, “”this damn train is going too fast and I want to get off and let it run me over already”. Gary Jules doesn’t want to be run over by a train – Gary Jules is happily trapped under the wheels already and is going, “Yup, well, I guess I’ll just stay here under the wheels in pain for a while.”
