The construction of a cake requires a synergistic relationship between the components of its construction, along with a necessary relationship with its environment (the oven at proper temperature, along with proper time), resulting in a novel construction that goes beyond mere addition of its original constituents. A pie, however, is merely its constituents, warmed up.
