I’m a bit skeptical to this day that a Fourier series can accurately reproduce a musical instrument beyond simple ones. A clean Trumpet, a couple types of bowed strings, a flute, bells. But anything more complicated like a piano? I have yet to hear any additive or subtractive synthesis that can come close. I think that’s why it was abandoned by the late 1980s. I think there are 2nd and 3rd order sounds that are emergent that a Fourier series simply can’t capture. For that reason, and others, I don’t think that the Universe is strictly harmonic in a Fourier series way.
In theory, additive synthesis could reproduce any musical instrument, along with other instrument necessities, but I grew up in an additive synthesis era (80s) and loved it, played around with it, created my own instruments, but the moment sampling came along, it blew adding fundamentals with harmonics together out of the water. There’s also subtractive synthesis, which takes any random noise and can subtract harmonics to achieve something better than additive synthesis but not as good as sampled. Sampling from what I know works differently than fourier series. Thing is:
I’m still not ready for that. I’m building up from a few universals right now, not so much focused on quantum mechanics just yet. My goal is searching for flaws, which is what I usually do. This allows me to be in a strong skeptical position to analyze whatever whole theories come out that try to explain it all and see what holds and is good and what fails due to hand waving. Hand-waving can be difficult to spot so I try to keep a distanced approach.
Not intentionally. Rather, I was thinking more directly of an analogy. If you pluck a string, various harmonics also sing but there is also the wave forms of the fundamental which make up the “texture” of the sounds that distinguishes a guitar pluck from a piano hit, and all of those waves start colliding, occasionally reinforcing and also cancelling but you should be able to find at the faintest, furthest harmonics, some trace of the original string texture present. It’s like cutting out all but a narrow range of frequencies in Audacity and still being able to tell what it is. The redundancy of information.
