Thank you and as a music inventor / composer this jives with my experience as well. I woke up this morning doing a counterpoint to Take on Me from Aha. Just started playing in my head without the other parts playing but faintly in the mental landscape. It got a life of its own before long and while I ‘knew’ it was compatible with Take On Me it was entirely distinct. I wondered, “Could I get the other parts back based on this?” I doubted it was possible in a direct fashion but i thought I’d ask anyway.

Trying to recreate the melody from counterpoint isn’t stupid as a mathematical question though. I can’t remember the name of it but there’s a deep mathematical problem they run into when they try to go “back” without know where the back is. You can go forward easily but not back. Something about one to many vs many to one.
