Thank you – absolutely circumstantial but I strove for it too. I wanted a modem since 1984’s War Games (12 yrs old) but couldn’t get one until 1989, which THANKFULLY was when I got my first PC instead of the “hook up to the TV” computer I learned BASIC and computer music on.
I was first on something called “PC-Link” connecting people with our kind of computer together. They had an 8-bit DAC which let you record. So, here I am, time stamping within in 1990 age 17/18 sharing my voice with other people online.
This is _before_ I got on the proper internet, which would be a month later when I got to college and saw my first VAX/VMS, green screen, mailing lists, etc.
Made friends with “elfinkind” or Otherkin in a mailing list – they were elves you see, or dragons – all the precursor of furries but part of the same thing. Interesting folks.
all kinds of fascinating casts of characters on the early internet.
But in this recording, online but not on the proper internet yet, I was using a CB radio handle I had as a teenager. Everybody was “wolves” so I figured “Steppenwolf” since it was a band. (and apparently a book I never read).
In any case, thank you 🙂 i’m still an internet advocate all these years later, even with the dark sides of it and all the people wanting to get off it now.
