Systems dynamics work with or without choice in them. That’s what’s great about using them for public policy decisions.
I’m a systems thinking guy. There may be no perfect model but a strong model can explain the dynamics of complicated interacting systems.
When applied to humans, they don’t eliminate choice but they can put choice in a measurable context.
You have to have clear thinking to think clearly. Ever try driving after 2 Benedryl?
We all have invasive thoughts but addiction is non-verbal. It’s animal. You will tear off doors to get at the addicted thing.
You’re like the “Think happy thoughts and you won’t be depressed!” guy.
I used to say that kind of thing which is why I’m mocking it now. I’ve never been depressed. They go through something I can’t relate to fully.
The thing you or I call “I’m depressed” is fixable by hanging out with friends, getting out of the house, a good movie or other distraction.
And I think that’s good advice “in general”.
But people with genetic / trauma / whatever level clinical depression, it’s at a different level than I can go.
Maybe you understand all people of all kinds in all places for all time, but I know there’s people fighting inner demons that I can’t fully know about because it’s their demons, not mine. I got my own and that’s enough.
and I’m not talking about word choices. Disease, demons, illness, Darwin’s law, I don’t care about words. But not having a wrong understanding is what I’m paying attn to.
