Results: Over a four-month period, the participants identified 46% of the tangible symbols to which they were exposed, and cognitive, language, play, and symbolism skills were not factors related to the successful acquisition of tangible symbols. The strongest predictor of outcome was independent ambulation, and seven symbols were the most often identified

The only variable that yielded a statistically significant difference was mobility. The participants who ambulated independently acquired more knowledge and use of symbols than did those who were nonambulatory or ambulatory with assistance. Children who ambulate have a greater opportunity to explore their environment purposefully than do those who are nonambulatory. Purposeful exposure to environmental stimuli may help this group to understand the symbols more readily than the nonambulatory group. Exposure to the environment provides opportunities for children to explore their surroundings and gain an understanding of the objects and people around them (Fraiberg, 1977).
