Staying close to people I need to help. They’re all on Windows so if I suffer along with them, I understand it. Also the challenge: I look to see what I can do for free on Windows when so much is commercial.
The regular computer user is Windows even now and has to deal with the insanity without much of a choice. By being the “smartest kid on the block”, I position myself to be of genuine service. Saying, “Get Linux” or “Get Mac” doesn’t help most people. So yes. Insane is correct.
Example: a family member got hit by Ransomware two years ago. Cryptolocker type – it’s one of the ones they never solved. I was able to cobble the system back together without losing any of the data.
Unfortunately the old data remains encrypted but their system works great otherwise. Hoping for fix one day to get it all back.
I have to exist among the unwashed masses. Somebody has to do it.
I have VM-ware as well. This old laptop can run most things pre-2008 in VM-ware and older OS even better. But it’s only a $400 laptop from 5 yrs ago and it’s my only running system. On its 2nd keyboard and with a broken e, 1 and 2 keys, its ready for its 3rd.
Keeps me grounded.
6gigs ram, Pentium B970 (not even i-series) 2.3 Ghz. I push it to its limits. I never reboot because when I do, it takes 1/2 hr to be usable.
Its been about 18 months since a reboot.
Mortgage, bills etc. I run a biz for my bro + sis-in-law but I only take minimal for myself and the biz. Used to make good money ($800/month) from Google ads (2007-2013-ish) but one of their updates snafu’d my rankings. It’s ok though. No complaints.
Used to be systems analyst for a pharma in NJ for a few years. Saved + invested 53% of income, did great in stocks from 1999-2014 when I widdled away the last of it. Stopped adding to it in 2002 so it was a 12 yr ride, and getting to work from home makes it worth whatever struggles there are.
