So, I don’t have MATLAB. Never had MATLAB. Never used MATLAB. But I needed MATLAB to run some code I found from from 1999 that I really wanted to see. So, there’s a free clone called Octave. Seems to be working perfectly.

Yup. Tells me a lot about stability. To me, backwards compatibility should be a guarantee, not a surprise. We’ve been trained otherwise, sadly.
