short dull story:
we used to go camping with relatives and in a camping club.
when I was about seven or eight years old, one camping trip it was just my mom and I think.
she had to run out of the campground for a couple of hours and asked my aunt and uncle to watch me and they said “sure”.
When mom got back, I was nowhere to be found.
“I thought you were watching him!” she said to my aunt and uncle.
they replied: “he’s not our kid, not our responsibility.”
she ended up figuring out where I was: in the rec room playing pool with the older kids.
but she never asked my aunt and uncle again.
she was always baffled as to how they could agree to watch me but then not watch me.
I think they watched me as long as they could see me but as soon as they couldn’t see me, they stopped watching me because I wasn’t there to be seen.
as ridiculous as that sounds, that’s the only answer I can think of.
