oh it can certainly be misused. for family photos though, the audience is tiny. nobody else really knows the family history but the family. in these cases i’m the one who pieces together their stories. maybe i’ll get things wrong. maybe i already did. but as these faces shown are completely within the range of “normal human facial expressions” i’m ok with it here. nobody else is going to write the story of margaret emma robertson. i have a re-enactment. some people don’t believe we should have actors portray historical figures. i think it’s ok and if there’s evidence that it’s done wrong then address it.
allow me another angle: i have no documentation of his personality. I am the caretaker of the image. There is perhaps a few dozen people in the world today alive that might ever be interested in seeing his face as a relative perhaps. I collected the stories I could find on him. I put together the genealogy. I put them in public online for others but I know they will be few if any. I animated the only picture I had of him. Who will do the research necessary to find out more than I could? Who’s place is it to determine The personality displayed of this man? I don’t know if this is correct or not. I also don’t worry about it being correct or not. the emotions displayed are within the common repertoire of human personalities there is nothing to lead me to believe that he or any other relative was unlikely or incapable of looking this way.
in natural setting i agree. but people do act. dating / courtship. getting photos taken. some better actors than others but most adults follow social scripts and facial expressions go along with much of that. i understand the problem you have with the imposed artificially mapping faces onto models that have a different body – like face transplants. its uncanny valley. almost unholy territory. and yet: the person is long dead. its amazing to have a photo. we have that technology. its amazing we have even MORE technology today, to animate 160 year old technology. a photo does not reflect a person as it is.
