Rare news report from WPIX after the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion. Particularly interesting to me are the interviews with the 7th grade kids who were part of an experimental college program.
I was in 8th grade at the time, only a year older, so these are my peers, and definitely reflects how we were all thinking at the time. I followed the shuttle progress with the same kind of interest as they did.
The one girl who says, “I wanted to go into space but not after this” was how it felt.
Then a boy later on who says that we need to keep exploring had a tone of being demoralized… a little closer to how I felt. It was a smack in the head : a realization that we can’t blindly go forward, yet we still must – or at least SOMEBODY must.
