Raised in the Reagan era where patriotism was lurking around every corner ready to slam me down, I remember “America Right or Wrong” was floating around as a bumper sticker slogan.
And even as a teenager I knew that, on the contrary, right’s right, wrong’s wrong, and what’s freedom if you can’t speak up about both at the same time.
Loved watching the Berlin wall fall. Loved seeing Glasnost or whatever it was. It was sold to me as America’s victory but even then I knew that no, it wasn’t that at all. It was a country that wanted change and they changed.
I rooted for the UN. I liked the “Justice League” cartoons and the idea of Earth fighting together against enemies from space until we get a diplomacy situation.
I also had crazy neighbors that believed the Trilateral Commission was part of a conspiracy run by group a and group b that were going to put in a “New World Order”. They made fun of people like that on Barney Miller.
Now they’re everywhere. Maybe they always were.
America’s a’ight for some, not a’ight for others but it’s got the capacity for improvement always and right now it’s going through some improvements.
