politicians control the money as do corporations. But there is a slightly higher calling _within_ the sciences itself, perhaps as banal as “reputation” but I like to think it’s doing it proper for its own sake – so even if not everything gets funded, that which DOES get funded and tested has a decent chance of reliability within itself, at least one would hope.
Of course the magic of science is in the mess of it too and then there’s publish-or-perish culture which renders a lot of what I said a little weaker, but a weak scientist has a stronger morality than a moral politician. That’s my bias right there.

I was raised not far away from the dude in the 1980s/90s, so none these consequences are shocking. As they say, “I’m not angry, just disappointed”.
