I’ve heard it too, and suddenly need to give credit to who first said it, because I’ve thought that since I was a teenager – likely after hearing it – and it’s _really_ helped my view of the world.

I’m guessing Joseph Campbell but I want to know now and I *will* find out.

Might be wells – I was shooting for Arthur Clarke – looking in some 19th century places – wells is a great candidate. Hard to track down “concepts” but I like the challenge.

I tripped over this in a SPORTS forum:

“And I’m going to assume that in 1000 years we will look back and laugh at the science of this generation just as we do that the science of the generation a thousand years before us. “

so the concept is definitely “out there”.. and not uncommon… but WHO STARTED IT? Hmmmm…..
