Out of “norms” “order” “pattern” “policy” “principles” “standards” which will be closest to “sense of duty”? Hm.

Out of
“norms”
“order”
“pattern”
“policy”
“principles”
“standards”
which will be closest to “sense of duty”? Hm.
===
Synonyms for “sense of duty”:
•inner voice (noun) – categorical imperative, moral code.
•motive (noun) – sense of duty, sense of shame.
•principle/principles (noun) – ethics, credo, conduct, character, tenet, opinion, policy, uprightness, code, system, faith, teaching, ideals, probity, rectitude, attitude, integrity, ethic.

Now I look up a definition:
principle
“a fundamental truth or proposition that serves as the foundation for a system of belief or behavior or for a chain of reasoning.”

So there it is. Substitute: domain for “system of belief”, “behavior”, “chain of reasoning”.

And it can. Good good.
===
 to “lay down principles” would be what the rule-makers do. Or rulers. Or those who establish the guidelines. And, “following the principles” is a phrase that can be strict or loose while being equally valid.

So credo covers a lot of territory. Principles as both rules and guidelines works as does a principled person. A domain can be guided by principles or ruled by principles — either way.

But: are principles strong enough of a concept? Does breaking principles convey banishment from a domain into the wilderness?
===
 Well, you can say: It’s a good principle to break the rules.
===
 “principles of operation”.
==
So: Principles are ideals. Goals. Wishes and desires. Hopes. They _can_ be requirements also and they can also be laws. But I don’t think they have to be.

I believe that laws and principles can be treated as “similar but separate”, with significant overlap when aligned but with some out of alignment.

How to show or prove I don’t know yet.
===
 O! Laws are derived from principles.
