Russia as a superpower that was cut off from being a superpower being balkinized and introducing an “anything goes” capitalism, which was FAR less strict than what we ever did — it was more like a Chinese marketplace, complete with mafia… – it was devastating to a Russian’s self-image. Such drastic change felt like impotence leaving a vacuum which Putin easily stepped into. “the devil you know”
