Only got 1.5 yrs b4 running out of $$ at Hampshire College. Took me 10 YEARS to finally finish paying that off – and that’s WITH a good scholarship. 1990-1991.
Was it worth it?
Did it make me $$?
Still worth it.
I got to step out of my social class for 18 months. I got a taste of things I knew would otherwise be out of reach. I wasn’t going to be part of a startup solar wind farm in Oregon, or travel the world investigating various cultures for a multicultural exchange. I wasn’t going to be a theoretical physicist or a world-class developmental psychologist or a professor in academia. That stuff was financially beyond me EVEN IF I wasn’t screwed by Reaganomics wrt to the scholarship.
But what I got? Early internet. Gender neutrality. First furries / otherkin. Pansexual stuff (old term). Making and running discussion groups online with thousands years before WWW was a thing. Respect. I got to try veganism. (wasn’t for me) Learned to be a decent human being instead of a xenophobic complainer.
All 10-25 years before the rest of the world started to notice a lot of that stuff.
I can only imagine that forward-thinking universities are helping students think 25 years into the future NOW to prepare for whatever 2050 brings.
18 months. Sept 1990-Dec 1991. Worth it. My mother never thought so but I wouldn’t have traded it for anything.
