One upon a time, there was a mysterious woman who followed me on Google+. Her English was broken. She became smitten as I was prone to writing “words of wisdom” a lot along with mathy-sciency thoughts and pretty pictures. I didn’t like the adoration so I said a few mean things to “spoil the milk” and then we were friends after that. Later on, she stated that in her country, I’d be a guru and could help a lot of people and if I’d consider moving one day. It was a high complement but the notion was scary to me; why would someone want to have adoring fans halt at their every word? I understand making statues in your honor, iconography, songs, etc. But to sit up there, live, just talking while people crowd forward and nod their heads – what is in that? I love the idea of being a public speaker but could never do it in a traditional way. But how do you manage the relationship between yourself and devotees? It seems fraught with bad trouble.
