I used to work extensively with WordNet.
WordNet is a hand curated database of English and other languages that attempted to connect millions of words together in a coherent way, including their usages, contexts in which they are similar and different, etc.
One of the most powerful areas for me in using WordNet has been in Hypernyms.
“Hypernym:
a word with a broad meaning that more specific words fall under; a superordinate. For example, color is a hypernym of red.”
I’m VERY WEAK at hypernyms. I’m also weak at what are established commonly known properties of objects (in an object oriented framework of knowledge) :
That is, abstracting and generalizing on a basic level.
WordNet had been very helptul to me but it was limited to very few words at a time. . A long arduous process for me.
chatGPT makes the chore much easier for me and expands what I’m able to do.
Meronymy, the part-whole relation holds between synsets like {chair} and {back, backrest}, {seat} and {leg}. Parts are inherited from their superordinates: if a chair has legs, then an armchair has legs as well. Parts are not inherited “upward” as they may be characteristic only of specific kinds of things rather than the class as a whole: chairs and kinds of chairs have legs, but not all kinds of furniture have legs.
