On a philosophy forum, someone asked: What is your belief in the afterlife? details appreciated. This was my response and critiques or complements or your own thoughts welcomed:

If we do not just go away in a puff of nothingness, which I’m open to the possibility of (I like prepositions), here is how I see it going: Your consciousness survives. But you have no body. No hands to touch with. No eyes to see. No ears to hear. It is just your mind. Now, in real life, if you have an itch, you scratch it. But what if you had an itch but no hands to scratch it with? (think of phantom limbs where they feel pain in a limb that is no longer there). If you have something troubling you on your mind, it would trouble you for an eternity, for there is nothing to distract yourself with. If you are addicted to something, you cannot relieve the addiction in any physical way, shape or form. But if you are at peace with yourself, ”think happy thoughts” as it were, it will be heaven. But if you have anything disturbing your consciousness, you will be in hell. I have disturbed many people with this notion of mine, but it is the best way I have found to illustrate the intense need to learn to be at peace with yourself, to constantly practice it. Be at peace with your situation, your lot in life. Strive but do not get attached to the striving. If you were composed of nothing but your thoughts, imagine what that would be like. Now imagine what you would have to do in this life to overcome the very bad aspects of it. Thoughts?
