Oh epic, they average out “similars” and can take a firing rate of up to 1000 per second.
 
” Of all cells in the cochlear nucleus, the octopus cells show the strongest synchronization to amplitude-modulated stimuli (49) and to the fundamental frequency of simple speech-like sounds (50). Not only is the precision in the timing of firing remarkable but these cells also show sharp tuning to modulation frequency in terms of average firing rate.”
